You Don’t Have to Be a Professional Athlete to Suffer a Sports Injury

Staying physically active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. But for many people, the typical week involves long hours at a desk, limited physical activity, and little structured exercise. When the weekend sets in, activity levels suddenly increase among recreational athletes, who are often referred to as “weekend athletes” or “weekend warriors.” The activities include a game of badminton, cricket, football, pickleball, or tennis; a long-distance run; a cycling session; or an intense workout at the gym.

However, going from a relatively low activity during the week to high-intensity exercise over the weekend can place a sudden and excessive load on muscles, tendons, joints, and bones. ‘This is where overuse injuries can develop.’

Unlike an acute injury caused by a fall, collision, twist, or sudden impact, an overuse injury usually develops gradually. It occurs when repetitive loading exceeds the body’s ability to recover and adapt.

A systematic review and meta-analysis found that the period prevalence of overuse injuries was approximately 42% in individual sports and 33% in team sports. However, the researchers noted limitations in the available evidence [1-6].

Why Are Weekend Athletes More Susceptible to Overuse Injuries?
The human body adapts remarkably well to physical activity when the load is introduced progressively and adequate recovery is provided.

Problems can arise when there is a sudden mismatch between what the body is prepared for and what it is being asked to do. 

Common contributing factors include:

  • Long periods of inactivity during the working week
  • Sudden increase in exercise intensity or duration
  • Poor flexibility or restricted joint mobility
  • Muscle weakness or strength imbalances
  • Inadequate warm-up
  • Poor movement or sporting technique
  • Incorrect footwear or equipment
  • Repeatedly training through pain
  • Insufficient recovery between sessions
  • Returning to sport too quickly after a previous injury

A useful principle to remember is:

“Your body adapts to consistent loading, not occasional overload.”

Common Overuse Injuries Seen in Weekend Athletes

     1.Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Despite its name, tennis elbow is common in

  • Badminton players,
  • Cricketers,
  • Gym-goers, and even
  • Office workers

Common Symptoms of Tennis Elbow

  • Pain over the outside of the elbow
  • Weak grip strength
  • Pain while lifting objects
  • Discomfort during backhand strokes

Why Does Tennis Elbow Occur?

Repeated gripping and wrist extension overload the forearm tendons, causing microscopic tendon degeneration

     2. Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

Rotator cuff problems are commonly seen in sports such as:

  • Badminton
  • Tennis
  • Swimming
  • Cricket
  • Volleyball

Common Symptoms of Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

  • Pain while reaching overhead
  • Night pain
  • Shoulder weakness
  • Pain during serving or throwing
  • Shoulder blade malalignment

Repeated overhead movements irritate the rotator cuff tendons if shoulder strength and control are inadequate.

     3. Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

Often referred to as “runner’s knee”. One of the most common knee complaints among recreational runners and turf sport athletes.

Common Symptoms of Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

  • Pain around the kneecap
  • Pain while climbing stairs
  • Discomfort after prolonged sitting
  • Pain during squats or lunges

Common Contributing Factors of Patellofemoral Pain

  • Weak hip muscles and quadriceps
  • Quadriceps and hamstrings imbalances
  • Foot pronation
  • Poor landing mechanics
  • Sudden increase in training volume

     4. Achilles Tendinopathy

The Achilles tendon absorbs enormous forces during running and jumping

Symptoms of Achilles Tendinopathy

  • Pain behind the ankle
  • Swelling over the tendon
  • Pain during running

Ignoring early symptoms can eventually lead to tendon rupture.

     5. Plantar Fasciitis 

A common source of heel pain.

  • Sharp pain with the first steps in the morning
  • Heel tenderness
  • Pain after prolonged standing

Plantar Fasciitis is often associated with:

  • Tight calf muscles
  • Poor footwear
  • High training loads
  • Limited ankle mobility

     6. Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)

Shin splints are commonly observed in:

  • Beginner runners
  • Cricket players
  • Football players
  • Military recruits

Common Symptoms of Shin Splints

  • Pain along the inside of the shin
  • Tenderness during running
  • Pain that gradually worsens with activity

Without proper management, this may progress to a stress fracture.

     7.Hamstring Tendinopathy and Muscle Overload

Weekend sprinting, football, cricket, and badminton often overload the hamstrings.

Common Symptoms of Hamstring Tendinopathy, include:

  • Pain while accelerating
  • Pain during sprinting
  • Reduced speed and power

Poor glute strength and inadequate warm-up are common contributors.

     8. Low Back Pain

Not every back-pain episode results from a disc problem.

Weekend athletes commonly develop back pain due to:

  • Poor core endurance
  • Limited hip mobility
  • Weak gluteal muscles
  • Sudden heavy lifting
  • Poor exercise technique

The spine often compensates when movement is restricted elsewhere.

When Should You Take the Pain Seriously?

Not every ache after exercise means you have an injury.

It is normal to experience some muscle soreness after doing something your body isn’t accustomed to. But persistent or worsening pain should not simply be ignored

Consider seeking professional assessment if you experience:

  • Pain lasting more than one week
  • Morning stiffness that continues daily
  • Swelling
  • Reduced strength
  • Pain that worsens with activity
  • Difficulty returning to your sport

Early intervention usually leads to faster recovery and helps prevent chronic injuries.

How Can You Prevent Overuse Injuries?

  • Train consistently
    Avoid being inactive all week and extremely active on weekends.
  • Increase training gradually
    Follow the principle of progressive overload rather than sudden spikes in activity.
  • Warm up properly
    Spend 10–15 minutes preparing the muscles and joints before sport.
  • Improve mobility
    Adequate ankle, hip and thoracic spine mobility reduces unnecessary stress on the joints.
  • Build strength
    Strong muscles absorb force more effectively and protect tendons and ligaments.
  • Prioritize recovery
    Sleep, nutrition, and rest are essential parts of training.
  • Listen to pain
    Pain is information, not something to “push through.”
